Photography, video, and music

Image
Hey everyone, I'm Reyna Oliva and I'm an interactive media major. Throughout the semester, I'm going to be posting blogs related to photography, video and even music because those are some of my biggest interests. Right now, I'll start of with a little backstory on these topics. When I was younger, I always loved taking my mom's old video camera and making videos with my little brother or just myself, with any toys or objects. I then went into my American Girl phase, and I ended up with 6 of them and made really cool stop motion videos with them. My patience has gotten so short over the years unfortunately, so I respect 11 year old me for putting all that time and effort into stop motion videos. They were so fun though, and I would love to get back into that. As I grew out of my American Girl phase, I continued to make videos with my friends and sometimes family. I also had an interest in photography, but I didn't have the proper equipment for it at the time. In...

Personal Blog 1

Personal Blog 1 of my life in college.  By Nicholas McClinton JR    I remember first picking my college and just going through all my options. With choosing my school I knew the importance of having support at the school and having small classrooms. I then choose North Central which is about 6 hours away from my home. Once I moved in, I instantly felt good about my choice. We went on with welcome week for the first-year students and transfer, that was a great experience that made you more comfortable. With welcome week you made more friends, in your hall or even in another hall. My schedule was already picked before I came to school, but it got real fast as welcome week was over. On the first day of classes I woke up feeling great. I have my schedule set to where all my classes start later in the morning. I got up and when to get some breakfast, but when I got there the waffle mix was gone so I had to settle for yogurt and fruit. I go to what I believe is my hardest class...

Personal Blog: My Transition from High School to College

Image
Graduation; May 25, 2021  Hi! I’m Bree and I’m a freshman at North Central College. I have been living here for about a month, and it has definitely taken some getting used to. The transition from high school to college is such an unfamiliar part of life that has a lot of ups and downs. When I was a senior in high school, I had no idea what to expect when moving into college, and I wish I took the time to read about or listen to someone else's experience before I moved in. Everyone’s freshman year of college is different depending on how big the school is, how far away it is, if you are living there or commuting, etc. Some background information about North Central College is that it is a smaller school that is 45 minutes away from my hometown. I decided to live on campus to gain some independence from my parents and to get the "college experience" that everyone talks about. I want to share my personal experiences of the intimidating transition as well as share random mom...

Playing Catch Properly

The first aspect of improving as a pitcher on your off days is how you attack the simplest warmup in baseball - playing catch on your off days. Some view playing catch as a means to warm up the arm. I try to challenge pitchers to treat playing catch like how you treat a pregame bullpen or how you treat actually being on the rubber. North Central College’s pitching coach, Tim Stoddard - a former MLB relief pitcher - has gone on the record emphasizing the importance of practicing just like you play.  Playing catch, no matter what distance you throw at, helps smooth out any mechanical and/or timing issues, as well as your sequencing. Playing catch with a high intensity also helps give instant feedback to any issue you may be trying to work on - if your catch partner has the move their glove, something has to be fixed. When a pitcher plays catch, the emphasis should be on trying to replicate their delivery patterns on the mound. PRACTICE HOW YOU PLAY . If your ball sails one way or a...

Tip #1: Adblockers - Exploring the Internet as Computer Scientist

Image
Hi all, I’m Emmanuel! I’m a junior Computer Science (CompSci; CS) major, which means I’m always the go-to guy when it comes to computer issues. So, I figured I should use this opportunity to tell everyone the best tips and secrets of computers and the web. Here we go! Tip #1. Adblockers Everyone hates ads. I sometimes wonder why they exist, but then I remember everyone has to eat. But not if I can help it. Lets cut straight to the point. Ublock Origin is probably the single best ad blocker out there in my opinion. In works in Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Opera. Unfortunately it no longer works in Safari, but you should probably be using Firefox anyway, and later I’ll explain why. Their website: https://ublockorigin.com To Install On Firefox click this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/ . press “add to firefox”. Done! OR               1. Click the three lines in ...

Powerlifting meet Personal Blog # 1-10

Week One of Nine Preparations For Powerlifting Meet  Personal Blog 1 - Intro to powerlifting The meet begins in nine weeks. Where I am competing at the heaviest  I have ever been, with proper training, coaching, and outside influence, the pressure is on. Powerlifting can be an experience, but not for me. It's business for me.     Week one went as planned, as the preparations begin, the atmosphere of the body begins to change as well. Ultimately, rep ranges change drastically from the traditional off season training. This can be stressful on one's body if not performed right. Since this week has just ended, the conclusions made are mainly focused on discipline. Discipline as in, to feel and understand your body to the level of competing. You're selling your body's performance, so no more junk food too. What you can take away from week one and the personal experiences overall, is to understand that it's okay if the numbers you were aiming to perform aren't un pa...

IT (1990) Review

To lead up to my favorite holiday of the year in a very festive fashion, I decided to watch a new horror film leading up to Halloween. I will be sharing my thoughts for each post and ranking them in my final publish. To kick off the binge, I watched the original IT from 1990 because of my love for the 2017 remake version. This movie had potential to be equally as entertaining as the first one due to my surprise that the character of Pennywise was being portrayed in a different more ‘joker’ type beat. Watching this version I loved this take of Pennywise who not only tries to scare them, but also seems to enjoy messing with them in order to make their lives more difficult in the meantime. Just by looking at the two versions of IT side by side you see the 90s version as a less threatening being. This Pennywise makes jokes and goes for laughs instead of scares for the majority of the movie. What threw me off was the casting for the older version of the kids who were given way too muc...

An Introduction On How To Be A Successful Pitcher On Rest Days

Hi everyone, my name is Sam Corbett. I am a left-handed collegiate pitcher at a nationally ranked Division III baseball program: the North Central College Cardinals . I graduated as the top-ranked pitcher in my high school’s athletic conference in the spring of 2020 and was later named to my collegiate prep club baseball team’s Hall of Fame as an All-Time Second Team Homestead Rancher, voted on by the coaches. I was named to the 2018 and 2019 CSL All-Star Team to represent Maine South HS at the Chicagoland Classic after leading varsity baseball in appearances in 2018, and innings in 2019. My senior high school season was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak, and I was subsequently redshirted my freshman year of college as most Cardinals opted to return to NCC for their fifth year of schooling. While I was redshirted, I was given the opportunity to focus more on offseason training than ever before. I had countless hours of conversations with strength trainers with CSCS and NASM cert...
