An Introduction On How To Be A Successful Pitcher On Rest Days
Hi everyone, my name is Sam Corbett. I am a left-handed collegiate pitcher at a nationally ranked Division III baseball program: the North Central College Cardinals. I graduated as the top-ranked pitcher in my high school’s athletic conference in the spring of 2020 and was later named to my collegiate prep club baseball team’s Hall of Fame as an All-Time Second Team Homestead Rancher, voted on by the coaches. I was named to the 2018 and 2019 CSL All-Star Team to represent Maine South HS at the Chicagoland Classic after leading varsity baseball in appearances in 2018, and innings in 2019. My senior high school season was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak, and I was subsequently redshirted my freshman year of college as most Cardinals opted to return to NCC for their fifth year of schooling.
While I was redshirted, I was given the opportunity to focus more on offseason training than ever before. I had countless hours of conversations with strength trainers with CSCS and NASM certifications; most notably Bill Miller, Declan Peterson, and the staff at Top Performance Stength; as well as with Dr. Josh Heenan, a leading doctor in baseball training and recovery based in Texas. I was also named the Head Pitching Coach for the Homestead Ranchers after graduating from the program and helped lead the Texas-level ballclubs to record-setting seasons in regards to team ERA and strikeouts in the 2021 summer season.
Over the next nine weeks, I plan on publishing an article per week focusing on the topic “How To Be A Successful Pitcher On Your Rest Days”. Everyone thinks a pitcher’s job only matters on the days he starts on the mound. A proper training regiment for a pitcher should be seven days a week. The tentative blog scheduled is as follows:
Playing Catch Properly
Throwing Bullpens
Weighted Ball Training
Core Velocity Belt Training
Post-Throwing Recovery
Upper Body Lifting
Lower Body Lifting
Proper Full-body Recovery
Scouting Opponents/Reviewing Your Film and Mindset
I will link hyperlinks to more in-depth articles on each topic written by Miller, Peterson, Heenan, and others. My goal in this blog is to give a brief understanding as to why each of the previously listed bullet points matters to a pitcher just as much as the actual appearance on the game mound.
