IT (1990) Review

To lead up to my favorite holiday of the year in a very festive fashion, I decided to watch a new horror film leading up to Halloween. I will be sharing my thoughts for each post and ranking them in my final publish. To kick off the binge, I watched the original IT from 1990 because of my love for the 2017 remake version. This movie had potential to be equally as entertaining as the first one due to my surprise that the character of Pennywise was being portrayed in a different more ‘joker’ type beat. Watching this version I loved this take of Pennywise who not only tries to scare them, but also seems to enjoy messing with them in order to make their lives more difficult in the meantime. Just by looking at the two versions of IT side by side you see the 90s version as a less threatening being. This Pennywise makes jokes and goes for laughs instead of scares for the majority of the movie. What threw me off was the casting for the older version of the kids who were given way too much screen time. The performances by the grown up losers club were flat and straight out embarrassing. The lines were either said like they were being read off a piece of paper or over acted like a middle school play. Everything I enjoyed from the 2017 version such as the chemistry between the kids and perfect mix of coming of age and horror genre was stripped away. I have it give it the benefit of the doubt for it being an made-for-TV film and with Stephen King adaptations being usually a little ridiculous when being portrayed on the screen. The effects were dated while being straight up laughable and the heart was not there. I would say that this film has not held up overtime and that it is definitely time that we admit that a remake can be better than the original. Overall, I would give this film 1.5 stars out of 5 just for Tim Curry's performance and character change I was not expecting compared to the 2017 film.
