Proper Nutrition As An Athlete
Here's the obvious - McDonald's isn't the best option. The typical statement of "Mass Equals Gas" also isn't necessarily true. If that were the case, every pitcher would strive to look like Bartolo Colon. Pitchers with lean, healthy mass, have the best potential because of a healthy body that is capable of being mobile at fast speeds. A good metric, produced by Dr. Josh Heenan, is to take your height (in inches), multiplied by 2.5 to get a minimum ideal body weight. For example, a 6-foot tall pitcher should strive to be at least 180 pounds.
Below are several notes that I have received over the years from professional S&C coaches and nutritionists:
Do not miss breakfast! Eggs and Oatmeal are ideal!
You MUST eat 3-5 meals/day depending on your goal.
Your caloric intake will determine weight gain/loss.
Drink at least a gallon of water each day. Fruits and vegetables will also help with hydration!
Get in the habit of packing food/snacks to make sure you eat something every 2-3 hours
- Protein bars, nuts, protein shake, cheese stick, canned tuna, sardines, PB&J
AVOID high fructose corn syrup. Ex: Soda, Candy, some breads, salad dressings, energy drinks, frozen dinners/pizza, canned fruit, sweetened yogurt, ice cream, some condiments/sauces
AVOID foods that have some form of sugar or sweetener listed in the top three ingredients
AVOID sports drinks away from a workout/game. Ex: Gatorade, Powerade
Rest is also incredibly crucial. Sleeping is the best form of recovery! Make sure you are getting good and consistent rest on a daily basis. Manage your time properly and use mornings to get schoolwork done to avoid having to stay up late. Think of your body as a car; the better the fuel, the better it performs, and the longer it lasts.
Fuel your body with the right nutrition and it will make a huge difference! I've found it to be incredibly valuable to log what I eat daily as well. Proper nutrition is the underlooked key to success.
