Spotify wrapped is one of my favorite things about having Spotify, and I've always looked forward to December because of this. It's still fairly new but has had positive feedback from the start. It's interesting to see how much my music preference has changed since the year before.
My top artist this year was Blackbear, which is not surprising. He's my favorite artist, and I still have yet to see him in concert. Waiting patiently for that day to come. According to Spotify, I was in the top .05% of his listeners listening to him for a total of 3,562 minutes this year. I don't remember the amount of minutes I listened to him last year, but I was also in the top .05% last year as well. I was hoping to get higher up that list of listeners just for fun but at least I didn't go down!
My other top artists included Big Time Rush, Mac Miller, Kid Cudi and Machine Gun Kelly. Around February, I found out BTR was on Hulu, then it shortly after got put on Netflix, so of course I rewatched for old time's sake. In my opinion, it beats any other Nickelodeon show out there. I know some would consider their music for a younger audience, but I love it. This month they are coming to Chicago for a reunion tour which is exciting.
A lot of times, I will go through a phase of listening to a specific artist for a certain amount of time. Spotify noticed this too, and noted some artists and playlists I "binged" frequently. Going through my top 100 songs, there's a lot of the same artists in there.
Throwback songs are something that appeared in my top 100 a lot. I guess I'm someone who likes reminiscing on the past, so a lot of music I listen to isn't super recent. I love music from the 2000s and early 2010s, the house party kind of music. I don't know why I like those eras of music so much but all I know is that it puts me in a good mood.
My top genres included pop rap, indie pop, dance pop, contemporary country and emo. Since blackbear was my top artist, that would probably explain why pop rap is my top genre, along with MGK too. Indie pop is one of my favorite genres of music, as Wallows is one of my favorite artists (despite not being one of my top artists this year, sadly). Dance pop definitely stems from the throwback 2000s and early 2010s music I love. Contemporary country has a bit of a backstory, as country music is something I used to make fun of all the time. But when I actually started listening to it I realized it's actually something I enjoy listening to. Honestly not sure where the emo came from, because emo to me is older music like My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy, which I did not listen to a whole lot this year. That may have stemmed from blackbear and MGK, because their music tends to be on the more sad side despite being upbeat a majority of the time.
Overall, my Spotify Wrapped this year was something fun to explore. I look forward to how my music taste will evolve next year and if I'll end up higher up on the list of top blackbear listeners.
