Photography, video, and music: editing progress over the years

Something I'm content with where I am and yet still always willing to learn about is video editing. I started when I was about 9 years old, making stop motion videos with my American Girl Dolls when I discovered there was a whole community of girls who made videos with their American Girl dolls on Youtube. This point in my life was probably where I learned the most and made the most of the little materials I had. I was influenced by them and wanted to learn all the things they knew.

A lot of the girls I watched had DSLR cameras and higher end editors, while I was stuck with Movie Maker on Windows and my iPod for a camera. As you can imagine, the picture quality was iffy, but it really could have been worse. Stop motion were the first type of videos I learned how to make. They take a lot of time and commitment but they were still a lot of fun. Not to sound cocky, but I think it's impressive an 11 year old could do that kind of stop motion. Especially since I didn't have many resources.

A video I made for fun

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of my progress is the video length. When I was younger, I always felt the need to show every little detail, making my videos really long. I've learned that shorter videos are better, because nowadays people have shorter attention spans and people are less likely to fully watch a 10 minute video on something that could easily be 3 minutes. I've learned to cut out unnecessary details and parts that the video can still be strong without. During quarantine time, I took over two hours worth of GoPro footage and cut it down to 4 minutes. Knowing myself back then, I would have cut the video down to maybe 10-15 minutes which is too long.

Around the time I was making videos with my dolls, I was also making videos with my brother and some friends. My brother and one of our friends created this group where we would make a bunch of videos for fun, and we would always get other people involved too. I learned a lot with how to use some basic special effects and it was so fun to learn all of it!

When I was 14 is when I grew out of my dolls (which may be old for some people), but I still continued to make videos with family and friends. I got a GoPro not too long after grew out of the dolls and that added to the cool shots I could get. Now, I still have a lot to learn but I'm excited to learn about it. I am majoring in interactive media here at NCC and plan to have a career in the field.
