Moments of Music: Drum Corps International

DCI, or Drum Corps International, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the junior drum and bugle corps. Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, DCI is responsible for developing and enforcing rules and regulations of competitions and shows throughout the United States and Canada.

There are 3 types of classes in DCI, any corps from Europe, Asia, Latin America, and anywhere else is grouped into the International Class. Corps from the United States and Canada can be grouped into two classes based on competitive level.

  • World Class (formerly Division I): are corps that have chosen to compete at the highest level.
  • Open Class (formerly Divisions II & III): corps that are committed to lesser competitive level.

"Marching Music's Major League" - DCI's Mission Statement

Drum Corps International: Marching Music`s Major League

The organization focuses on creating an environment for participating corps to engage in education, competition, entertainment, and individual growth. Marching band and DCI are one of my passions when it comes to music. I've played trumpet for more than a decade now, and enjoyed marching band and playing in music ensembles and competitions since elementary school. I've included a few performance videos below; two are marching band shows that I've performed in, and the last video is one of my favorite DCI performances by the Bluecoats.

During band camps, we would watch a lot of performances by the Bluecoats and Phantom Regiment, along with other DCI videos. We also attended several marching band and DCI related events, where we got to watch professional corps perform live.

This marching band performance was taken during my senior year in high school. Our show title was Pirates of the Caribbean.

This marching band performance was taken during my junior year of high school, where our show title was Viva la Vida.

This video is of Canton, Ohio's Bluecoats during their performance titled Tilt (2014).
