Tragedy Girls (2017) Review
For my second Halloween horror film, I decided to watch ‘Tragedy Girls’, a comedy horror film that premiered on Hulu back in 2017. To quickly summarize, 2 teenage girls run a blog called ‘Tragedy Girls’ about the murders that are frequently occuring in their small town. The interesting part is that these young girls are actually the ones committing the murders and covering them up by framing a local famous serial killer. Eventually, this steers into a downward spiral for the girls' need for fame along with the raging hatred for their cheer captain and ex-boyfriends. All of this while portraying teenage girls' hormonal years in high school extremely well. This film is also paired with a perfect indie pop soundtrack that sounded like it was straight out of my highschool playlist (which may have swayed my rating for this film a bit).
Films like Jennifer's Body and Heathers have a very similar tone and touch on underlying themes about female friendships in developing years. Showing this on screen is risky because it's rarely portrayed well or realistic, but it actually worked well here. This was because the two leads had great chemistry that tricked you into rooting for the relationship between the pair even when their characters were committing disturbing crimes. The cast somehow managed to succeed even with an overall cringey script. This script fell flat with what was an over exaggeration of internet slang that isn't as witty as the cult classic
Jennifer's Body that it tried too hard to be at times. I also would have changed the casting for the male best friend played by Jack Quaid, son of famous actors Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid. Quaid looked like he was a 30-year-old man playing a 17-year-old and it was extremely distracting for a role that anyone could have played. While it definitely could have been better, I enjoyed this film a lot especially for what it was trying to be, a self-aware parody movie. I would rate this a 3 out of 5 stars because it is perfect for the fall time and I always enjoy horror that has a satisfying ending (well, depending how you look at it and who you were rooting for).
