Personal Blog: The Workload of a College Freshman
All of my teachers in high school said comments to the class like "if you think this is hard, wait until you start college." After hearing this statement multiple times in high school, it made college classes seem very intimidating. I won't lie, walking into a college class for the first time is scary, but when you think about it walking into a classroom your first year of high school was scary too. After the first couple of days of going to class, I got used to the new aspects of attending class at my school.
A Classroom at my College |
At my school, we have four classes per semester, and these classes either meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays or Tuesdays and Thursdays. A nice part of college is that you are in each class for a short amount of time during your day, and any free time you have to spend on homework. I personally do not participate in a sport or have a job this year, so I have more free time than other freshmen. The amount of homework I have for each class is honestly not too overwhelming. The only time I find myself struggling to keep up is when all of my classes have big assignments coming up, which is just up to chance. Of course, there is the dreaded finals week, but I have not yet experienced that.
This semester, all of my classes are quite different from each other which is honestly really nice. My major is business management, and I am minoring in journalism. The amount of homework you have depends on your major and which classes you decide to take. I am taking financial accounting which is an introductory accounting course, and that is all of the math that I have in my schedule. I am also taking a class about ethics in business and globalization which requires a lot of reading and studying. I have two writing classes, and one is the required core class that every freshman has to take, and the other class is a requirement for my journalism major which is a digital media writing class. The good news is that I enjoy writing, so having two writing-focused classes is good for me.
The best advice I can give when it comes to homework is to not procrastinate because the amount of work you have to do will build up very fast. I had really bad cold symptoms and it led me to fall behind on my homework for my classes, and while I was catching up I was being assigned more homework. It is best to just sit down whenever you can and get as much done as possible. Once you complete your homework for the day you immediately feel better and more at ease.
