Personal Blog: Moving into My Dorm
Moving away from home is intimidating, especially because you have lived there your whole life. The ideas of a fresh start and living in a new place are the exciting concepts that I focused on right before move-in day. I spent all of the week before the official day packing, and I made a checklist to make sure I remembered everything. I watched videos and read about what to bring and what not to bring to college and that helped a lot as well. The day before, my whole family came over and we had dinner and they put all of my stuff in the back of my stepdad's truck. We took group pictures and we all talked about how much fun I'm going to have at school. I have always felt better once I have my family's support, and they helped me through the process.
An In-Depth List of What you Should Bring!
I woke up around 9 am and got ready for the day. I put the rest of my stuff in the truck, and I was starting to get a little sad about leaving home. I drove my green SUV (which I named Patricia in high school) with my boyfriend in my passenger seat, and my mom drove the truck there. We may or may not have gotten lost trying to figure out where to park to unload my stuff into my dorm, and I had to ask a cop where to go. If this happens, it is not a big deal because everyone on campus is focused on getting you moved in safely or trying to move in themselves!
We finally got into my dorm room at 11 A.M. and my roommate had already moved everything in on her side. We only were allowed an hour to move in and so it was sort of hectic. None of my decorations were sticking to my walls, and my mom was getting frustrated that my bed was so tall when she was trying to make my bed (being short runs in my family). After a lot of yelling and stressing, we eventually got everything to look decent. I took pictures with my mom and my boyfriend, and then we had to say our goodbyes. Like I said before, I only live 45 minutes away from my school's campus, but I was still really sad to say goodbye to both of them. I was so used to seeing them every day that it was going to be strange not being able to. Once I hugged my boyfriend I started to cry and so I told them to leave before I got emotional.
Once I met back up with my roommate, I instantly felt better as I had someone to talk to about everything that happened. We had a lot of events to go to the rest of the day, and I was so glad I had my roommate with me to get acclimated to living at school. It definitely was a crazy day, but once it is over you realize how worth it it is.
