Personal Blog: Making Friends at College

In high school, everyone has their set friends that they may have had their whole life. During my senior year, my friends and I were so excited about choosing our colleges and having a fresh start. My two best friends decided they both wanted to go to a school in Iowa, and after they made this decision they immediately distanced themselves from me. I was okay with this because I was going to spend most of my summer working and saving up money for school anyways. I also knew that I was going to move away soon myself, and I was really excited about the idea of making new friends. I grew up in a small town and my friends had been the same people since first grade. Meeting new people was definitely going to be good for me, and I knew that.

After I moved into my dorm, my roommate Alexis and I went to the football field because it was the first required event of the day. There were events one after another scheduled for the freshman, and Alexis and I stuck together and met a lot of new people throughout the day. After the rally at the end of the night, we went outside and the orientation staff was playing music and all of the freshmen were outside. Alexis and I started talking to two girls named Madison and Sydney. We talked for the rest of the night and got each other's Snapchats.

The next day we ended up meeting up with them again and we played a card game that my roommate is obsessed with called "Egyptian Ratscrew". We all started laughing at Sydney because she did not know how to play the game at all even though we had done multiple rounds at that point. We ended up going to every welcome week event that we could together. We went to a fun one called "Casino Night" where we got to play card games and bet on fake chips. One of the members of the orientation staff working the event called Sydney "Cindy" so naturally, we all started calling her that and still call her Cindy to this day.

We all continued to hang out throughout the rest of the week, and we finally met Sydney's roommate Leah, who we all loved immediately. I was not expecting to meet such close friends right away, and I am so glad that I went to the welcome week events my school held. My biggest recommendation for freshmen is to go to these events! I might not have become friends with Madison and Sydney if I had made the decision not to go. They continue to be the people I spend all of my time with and I do not know what I would do without them.
