Two Minute Technology: Virtual Reality

Two Minute Technology: Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Most of us are familiar with the head-mounted display (HMD), which is worn on the head or can be a part of a helmet. Major players in virtual reality include HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR (PSVR). Augmented reality is similar but different from virtual reality, as augmented reality (AR) superimposes computer-generated images over a user's view of the real world. Virtual reality (VR) creates an interactive environment for the user, completely separate from the real world. There are many applications of VR, including entertainment (i.e. video games), education (i.e. career exploration and training, medical or military training) and business (i.e. virtual meetings).

In addition to the headset, the use of data gloves, or controllers, equipped with force-feedback devices that provide the sensation of touch, the user can even pick up and manipulate objects that they encounter in the artificial three-dimensional space. In recent years, virtual reality has been on the rise as game developers are working on video games that support VR technologies.
